Ever wondered what toasted sandwich recipes you can make with baked beans? Well, the answer is a lot and I have some of the best right here for you. Including, videos showing you how to make these great baked bean toasties.

But, before we get to the great tasting baked bean recipes here is a little background on the humble baked bean and why you shouldn’t be afraid to try it in a toasted sandwich.

Baked Beans are a super food

Many people, me included, consider Baked Beans to be a superfood. After all they are packed with Protein, Fibre, Potassium, Iron, Vitamin B6 and lots of other essential minerals.

Plus, they are really easy to make even when done from scratch.

But what really makes them a superfood in our house is just how great they are in toasted sandwiches.

A quick history of baked beans

While Baked Beans have been adopted as a British Comfort Food for rainy evenings (of which we have many) it is likely that they originated from America where Native Americans would mix the beans with maple sugar and bear fat. They would then slow cook the beans in pots underground in holes lined with hot rocks.

However, some people will argue that the dish is derived from the famous Cassoulet bean stew from France but the strength of the American argument comes from the type of beans used as they all originate from the Americas and didn’t come to Europe until the 16th century.

For more on the history of beans and the development of commercial beans through to the bean we know and love today see the following Wikipedia article.
